“Even such is Time” ~ Sir Walter Raleigh

“Even such is Time” ~ Sir Walter Raleigh

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

At first time gives us youth and youthful joys

Without harsh hair, but when that grows we pay

For it with harsh intensity.  Our toys

Become the men and women in our way,

Or maybe girls and boys if we are priests.

Then time brings age and turns our joys to rust

Since human joys are not of gold.  Like beasts

We go to death and dry, dry joyless dust.

The silence in our graves sings, lacking throats,

So nothing, nothing, nothing.  All sound dead

Inside us and without us.  Rhyming notes

Are killed, non-silk becomes less than a shred.

Our stories written and our poems done,

Time has a chuckle, “You have had your fun.”
