Circle Set of Circles

The snowdrop is the spring, the daffodil

The trumpet spring . . . and peony the full
Completion: birth, then childhood and the spill
Of life in yellow sun, . . . then, then the pull

To perfect petals, pinking sheers for frills.
Each pang that pierces through is birth
In progress, found fruition of love’s thrills.
The circle of the sunrise gives great worth
To all our little days. The people know
This in their night-time ways and also feel
This in their sunless veins. The coming snow
Of manhood is the turning of life’s wheel.
The brittle sunrise and the brittle day
Are turned to greater ring and greater ray.
