The Scuttlebutt Door Prophecy

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

At least Saint Ellen only held a book

Aloft, impossibly, and didn’t claim

To feel her total quaking body shook

By angel penetrations.  In this game

Of visions, Ellen came in third at best.

Besides she also made her false predictions.

She claimed that disbelievers’ hearts, lest

Repenting, would suffer maledictions.

The Door of Grace would certainly be shut

On all post 1845.  So, you

And I and everyone alive now—we are cut

Off from salvation.  That’s that seer’s view.

So, since we can’t be saved, we do not sigh.

We’re gay and eat and drink for soon we die.
