Oliver in the Gaze of Elio

Modern poetry modern verse contemporary poetry contemporary verse modern poem contemporary poem

They notice, each one, instantly, the first

Few seconds of their meeting, not just young

One in the eyes of older one.  A burst

Occurs (well, two bursts) in male hearts, both strung

To highest pitch.  The music must proceed

From height to height.  No other key can show

A way.  Two hearts both hold the human need

For heat.  That Cupid guy will strike his blow

And WHAM . . . these two are on the way

To unity inside their chests, one still

In childhood’s narrowness, but hearts will say

What hearts must say.  Male organs quickly fill.

The young one sees the thickness and the strength.

What neither one desires is tortured length.
